Porta Alpina

The Porta Alpina is the name of a railway project of Gare in the middle of the mountain in the middle of the basic Tunnel of Saint-Gothard.

Description of the project

This underground station would be connected to surface by a 800 meters height elevator to emerge with Sedrun in the canton of the Grisons. Sedrun is already one of the three intermediate points of attack of the tunnel and will be transformed at the end of work into station. The inhabitants of the Grisons accepted the project during a popular voting.

First of all supported by the federal government, the project is not finally financially constant by the Confederation, thus forcing the government of the Grisons has to give up the project on September 13rd, 2007.

Arguments

The main argument in favor of this project is to reduce by half run time in public transport between the towns of Zurich, Lucerne, Lugano and Milan with Sedrun, thus making it possible to instigate the area touristiquement. The arguments against the project relate to its cost (approximately 50 million Swiss francs, is approximately 33 million euros) as well as the problems involved in the stopping of the trains in the tunnel (not of unfolding of the ways for the station) which decreases the capacity of the tunnel.
