Port Severn (Ontario)
Port Severn is a village with the mouth of the river Severn close to the bay Georgienne. It is localized near the highway 400 in the south of the town of Parry Sound. It is the ending period of the inland waterway the Trent-Severn which starts more in south-east on the level of the Lake Ontario
History
The village in the beginning was known under the name of Severn Mills following the presence of a sawmill (English Sawmill) built in 1830. About 1850, the wood of the area was transported by boats and the village was famous Port Severn in 1868. In 1875, the company Georgian Bay Lumber Co. was created and it became the principal sawmill of the basin of the Severn river. The population very quickly increased during 20 years. In 1896, the sawmill was devastated by a fire caused by the lightning. The population then started to decline. With the end of work in 1915 of the inland waterway the Trent-Severn, the area was reconverted into tourism.
