The port PS/2 (Initials of Personal System/2 ) or port Mini-DIN is a port of connection of size reduced for mouse or keyboard.

History

It appeared with the computers IBM PS/2 towards 1987.

Previously the keyboard connected on a catch DIN, more gross that current mini-DIN, but with very the stitching. As for the mouse, it connected on a port series, or on a port owner.

Ports PS/2 gradually become obsolete, the port USB being used in replacement. One can also connect keyboards and mouse without wire thanks to the Bluetooth or with the Wireless USB.

Use

Even if its connector industry is mainly dedicated to the connection of the peripherals users (the such mouse and the keyboard), Nvidia and Leadtek have at one time derived its use by adapting it on their graphics cards as a video out (to connect on a TV or other…). One can find this connection on geforce2 MX 400 for example. However, very few compatible cables are found and the standards evolved to the RCA or theVideo one, leaving this technology on side.

Precaution

It is strongly disadvised connecting or to hot disconnect material on a port PS/2 because that can bring to the deterioration of the mother chart.

It is also disadvised connecting the mouse on the port keyboard and vice versa. This is why on the mother charts ATX (standard created in 1995) and on the connectors of the peripherals there are codes of colors (purple for the keyboard, green for the mouse) on the catches. Before 1995 the assembly of the PC was generally reserved to the professionals.
