Port (botanical)

See also: Port

The port , in botany, indicates the general aspect of a plant.

One distinguishes mainly the hurled port, in more or less broad columns (poplar of Italy), the conical port (Conifère S, lime of wood), the round or spread out port (Hêtre, Magnolia X soulangeana , chamaecyparis), the whining port, with the falling down branches (Weeping willow, whining Cèdre). In Vine growing, the port term generally has a direction more restricted and indicates the pace of the Rameau X when those are not supported by a Palissage (set up or drawn up port when the branches are vertical, falling down or spread out port when they are horizontal).
