Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône

History and characteristics

Commune created in 1904 by distraction of Arles and Fos-sur-Mer on which its history is dependant. Saint-Louis channel dug in 1871. Parish set up in 1886. Industrial town and port annex Marseilles with the mouth of the the Rhone, architecture ventilated (many green areas), vast avenues, Tour Saint-Louis founded in 1737. One finds large farmhouses there camarguais, the city is known for his 3 beaches: Napoleon beach, Olga beach and Carteau beach.

One also finds there horses being useful in the Manade S for example, as well as pink flamingos being in the marshes.

Territory uniformly with flower of water, prolongation of the the Camargue. There are also many marshes and cultivated plans, vast salt-water marshes.

The Camargue produces primarily salt, mineral oil, as well as factories of petrochemistry and Minoterie (transformation and valorization of corn).

  • local Festival: third Sunday of July (bullfight, folklore, tournaments).

  • Festival of the districts: in June, for Saint-Louis.

  • Beach on the Rhone: school of veil, school of Kitesurf (Carteau beach), nautical club, fishing at sea, horsemanship.
