Port-Joinville

Port-Joinville is, with approximately 2000 inhabitants, an important locality of the Île of Yeu in the department of the the Vendée in the area Pays of the Loire.

Port-Joinville is on the north-eastern coast of the island. From there, one reaches, into 30 or 70 minutes, Fromentine, the Pit on the Île of Noirmoutier or Saint-Gilles-Cross-of-Life.

Until the seventeenth century, existed simply a small natural port, protected by two stone piers. He was appreciated like stage between Bordeaux and the ports of North, particularly by the Breton sailors, from where its name “port with Breton” then, later, “Port-Breton”

At the 17th century, a new quay was built. In 1846, the port was renamed Port-Joinville in the honor of François of Orleans, prince de Joinville, who had contributed to the development of the port. To the 20th century, were added a basin, a modern fishing port and a marina. In 2005, catamarans can be wet beside the harbor station. For a long time fishing was the primary source of incomes. A certain number of treatment plants of fish were closed and, in 2005, a large hall of sale by auction was demolished.

Today, the income of the islanders comes primarily from estival tourism. Port-Joinville is appreciated for its original habitat for the area, consisted of typical white small houses. Along the port, there are many trade referring to fishing and the fishermen. Beside a large supermarket, one finds small retailers traditional (bakers, butchers, ironwork).

The bicycle is a particularly popular means of displacement on the island and of many hirers out of bicycles flower. Lines of bus offer an alternative to the cars.

The marshal Philippe Pétain there is deceased and is buried in the cemetery with the top of Port-Joinville. He was imprisoned of 1945 to 1951 at the height Pierre Levée.
