The rhenium is a chemical element periodic Tableau, of symbol Re and Atomic number 75.
Rhenium is a silver plated Métal which resists marvelously well the Corrosion and has an exceptional tolerance with the Chaleur.
Rhenium has however few applications, because of its scarcity and of the high production costs. One usually extracts it from dust of Molybdène, in the industrial furnaces, of which it is a powdery by-product of gray color, but rhenium is also found with the state of traces in certain minerals.
One makes use of rhenium to improve thermal resistance of the filament of the electric furnaces, in the production of thermocouples and like catalyst in chemical industry.
It has as a characteristic not to be neither attacked by the Hydrochloric acid , nor by the sulphuric Acid but dissolves in the nitric Acid .
History
Rhenium (of the Latin Rhenus , the Rhine) is the natural elements which were discovered later. One generally considers it is Walter Noddack, Ida Tacke, and Otto Berg which discovered it in Germany in 1925. They detected it in the ore of Platine and in the Colombite. They also found some in the Gadolinite by spectroscopy of x-ray and in the Molybdénite. In 1928 they extracted 1 from them G starting from 660 kg from molybdénite.
The process was so complicated and the cost so high that the production was stopped until the beginning of the Années 1950, when one started to prepare alloys tungsten-rhenium and molybdenum-rhenium. These alloys are very useful in industry, and there is then a rhenium strong demand, produced starting from the Molybdénite contained in the cupriferous porphyry .
An important application in physics: high pressures
Rhenium is used as joint in the cells with diamond anvils (CED), which are devices making it possible to generate hydrostatic high pressures (up to 100 GPa). Two diamonds are used as window for the exiting light and has a presentiment of a metal joint in which one bored a hole which is used as room sample. The reduction in the volume of the room involves an increase in the pressure when two diamonds approach. Rhenium is the most resistant material to make a joint (far in front of stainless and alloy of Cube).
