Porphyry of Tyr

Porphyry (234-305?) is a philosopher neoplatonician. He wrote a treaty Against the Christians . Among its disciples, it seems that it is necessary to count Jamblique. Porphyry thinks as the Christianisme as well implies a design absurdity and irrational of the divinity who would condemn it, from the point of view of the particular religions as from the point of view transcending of philosophy.

In the treaty On the return of the heart , he proposes very an other theory of the relationship between philosophy and religion: the religions would be addressed only to lower gods or demons; philosophy would transcend them, because it would be the worship of the supreme God, whose philosopher is the priest.

Its historical work

Apart from its philosophical activity, he was also historian as attests it the testimony of Eusèbe de Césarée in its Chronology. Porphyry had developed the hellenistic history, in particular of the dynasties of the Ptolémée S, and the Séleucides.

Eusèbe for this time knew to draw from the Porphyry work of many attached facts has an obviously rigorous chronology. The curiosity which animated the activity of this author all the more makes regret the loss of an important part of its works. But its positioning antichrétien which was worth enmities near the Christian writers to him, could perhaps explain the dispersion of some of its writings. Eusèbe de Césarée did not indicate it in its chronology like: “Porphyry our enemy”?
