Porcupine

The pigs-épics are rodent which are divided into two families, the Hystricidae and the Erethizontidae, the latter originating in the American continents. Their peeling of hairs and prickles protects them from the predatory ones. They are long from 60 to 70 cm of the muzzle to the tail and are held like a Ours, the plant of the foot posed firmly on the ground. Of solitary nature, short-sighted, they limits to them Social life with the needs for the reproduction and, sometimes, with the division of the vegetation, them food. They are among the largest rodents of the world after the Capybara (also called cabiai), the Canadian beaver and the paca ( Agouti paca ).

Habitat

The species of America, Erethizon dorsatum , adapts without problem to the boreal areas, where its distribution extends until the limit from the trees. Sometimes it penetrates the inhabited areas because, one thinks, it seeks Sodium which it finds there in the form of salt left by perspiration. The porcupine takes a maximum form of 0,5 km/h

Species

A species of South America weighs less than one kilo whereas much reaches 20 kg. Those of America are often the excellent climbing ones with the trees and their prickles are individualized (and not in tufts).
