Porco rosso

is a cartoon film carried out in 1992 by Hayao Miyazaki within the Studio Ghibli.

Synopsis

“This film tells the history of the valiant pig called “the red pig”, which fights against the pirates of sky for his honor, its Madonna of worship and her goods. The scene occurs in the Sea Méditerranées at the time where the seaplane controls sea water. ” can one read as an introduction at the time of the opening of film (the French translation is approximate, which explains awkward turnings) inter alia languages.

In Italy, during the period of the inter-war period, on bottom of economic recession and rise of the Fascism, on a deserted island lost in the Adriatique a highly skilled old driver of the Italian air forces sees himself transformed into pig and reconverts himself as an bargain hunter. He is made call Porco Rosso .

In its Hydravion red, many are the adventures: drive out with the hijackers who took for practice of détrousser the tourists of passage in the area, flight with the rescue of travellers taken as an hostage, duels air, races of seaplanes, subterfuges to sow the Italian secret police… the life of the pilot is animated and rich in adventures.

In spite of the apparent lightness of film (because the purpose of it was originally to slacken the teams of the studio Ghibli which had just finished Omohide poro poro ) Porco Rosso is an indictment against the war and its nonsenses. It approaches sets of themes such as that of the myth of the hero.

Notable elements

  • the opening of film specifies that the action is in the Mediterranean but, with the sight of the landscapes, it would seem rather than the history occurs in the Adriatic. This seems all the more true as Miyazaki with insisted on the fact that it had been marked by the events which occurred in ex- Yugoslavia during the development of film.
  • One does not know why Marco Pagott, alias Porco Rosso , is found transformed into pig. One of the assumptions is that, disgusted and having lost any hope in mankind, he rather prefers affublé being of a head of pig than to continue to serve an army which is with the service of Fascism, after Italy rocked in the forces of the Axis.
  • In spite of some indices (the kiss given by small Fio, the reaction of Curtis…), it is not really known if it finds an human face at the end of film.
  • Although alive on a deserted island, it is however not world cup outside, as the newspapers testify some which it reads, a radio and a telephone (which the connection one could be established does not know too much how).
  • the trophy Schneider, evoked in film, indeed existed. It was about an old race of seaplanes. Piccolo evokes the fact that in 1925 Curtiss gained the cut: it is also exact.
  • Gina, owner of the Adriano hotel and Madone of film, sing the Time of the cherries , a certainly implicit reference to passed of communist trade unionist of Miyazaki.
  • One sees in film a Gitanes cigarette pack, posed on the table when Porco checks its ammunition before its duel with Curtis. At the beginning of the scene of continuation with the fascistic police force, when Fio stops to take Porco, mark FIAT appears on the grill of the truck. They are two of the rare times where one can see a reference to a mark in films of Miyazaki. One can also see the gasoline " mark; Shell" when Porco wants to fill the tank.
  • During its stay in Milan, Porco benefits from it to go to see a film with the cinema, while waiting for the end of repairs of its seaplane. The projected film is a cartoon in which one can see a pilot pig of plane holding the role of the malicious one.
  • One can see written “Ghibli” on the engine that Piccolo installs on the seaplane of Porco. It is one of rare autoreferences to the visible studio in the feature film even. It is the case also in Kiki the small witch. Ghibli being the name of an engine of plane. Miyazaki having chosen this name for its studio, since his/her father, old driver had controlled Ghibli.
  • the seaplane of Porco Rosso would be Savoia S.21. S.21 truth is actually a biplane. For design of the plane, Miyazaki seems to be inspired of Macchi M33 and joined together the two wings in a monocoque wing placed at the top of the fuselage.
  • At the time of the opening of film, a short introduction is given in several languages simultaneously in the order of screen display:
