The term people adopts different directions according to the point of view where one places oneself.
When it indicates a whole population, it is the sum of the individuals who form at a time given a historical community mainly sharing a feeling of durable membership. This feeling of membership can come from at least from these characteristics: a common past (real or supposed), a common territory, a common language, a common religion.
In French, the term of people can have also a social connotation: it is the whole of the individuals belonging to the sub-bases and possibly averages of the company, in opposition to the aristocracy.
The term has finally a political significance: it is the whole of the citizens equipped with the political rights. The constitution of Ve French Republic indicates thus that “the republic is the government of the people, by the people, for the people” .
In French, the names of the people are always written with a capital letter: the G aulois, the F rancs; but not adjectives referring to these names: the people G aulois, the ranques tribes F .
