Populares

Populares (in French: popular ): populist political tendency which marked the Roman République, in particular in IIè front century JC, while being based on the claims of the poorest layers of the Roman company and the not-citizens. It was not a political party with the modern direction, but a major cleavage in the political struggles and social Roman, making it possible to the political actors to position vis-a-vis the conservatism of the Optimates within often moving personal alliances. The principal demands supported by the populares related to:

  • the land reform, attribution with the stripped ground citizens taken on the Ager publicus conquered by Rome and the creation of news colonies
  • the abolition or the reduction of the debts of the poor citizens
  • distributions of corn at low prices, then free
  • the granting of the Roman Citizenship with the Italian Municipe S
Initiated by Patricians reformists like the Gracques, which gained the support of the rising class of the knights, the movement evolved to the Démagogie and the Populisme, and was recovered by the ambitious ones such as Marius, Cinna, Catilina or of the agitators like the powerful orators Saturninus and Clodius Pulcher.

Pumped, of equestrian origin then Jules César, ruined patrician, rested on the populares for their rise with the capacity. The end of the civil wars and the consolidation of the capacity of Auguste correspond to the extinction of the movement populares , with the satisfaction of the claims which were at its origin and with the end of the power struggles.
