Pop punk

The pop punk is a less rough and mélodieuse variety of the Punk rock'n'roll, sometimes also called punk MTV or teenage punk .

This name inevitably does not satisfy the most radical members of the punk scene who regard the association of pop and Punk as a Oxymore and regard certain groups sometimes gathered under this name as Pop-rock'n'roll. Consequently they often prefer to use the expression punk pop , noisy pop or punk plastic to qualify them. They defend their point of view by taking for proof the resolutely commercial orientation of these groups, diffused in loop on MTV, compromising incompatible in their eyes with ethics Punk.

Because of this commercial success, an amalgam is too often made besides with groups like Avril Lavigne with the Canada or Kinito in France which cannot assert the same past, the same one lived scenic or the same influences and are simply very short Rock.

Characteristics

Fresher and general public that the Punk, thepunk one has saturated sonorities and is accompanied by melody songs, contrary to the hardcore, which is located to him on the other side of the punk spectrum and where the song is shouted. It is also characterized by airs voluntarily involving and merry. The words are also light, even full with are delirious immature and schoolkids, energy of inevitable and traditional subjects like the girls until the scatologic jokes, or with the masturbation as in the song " Longview" of Green Day

History

The album of Green Day Dookie (1994) is often regarded as an essential stake in the popularization of pop punk, even as a moment founder from which the groups would result which exploded the kind at the end of the years 1990, like Blink 182 or Sum 41. The label of Green Day at the time, Lookout! Records, created in 1987 by Larry Livermore, knew to capitalize on this new tendency and is also frequently quoted like one of the matrices of pop punk new. Kung Fu Records, the label directed by Joe Escalante and Warren Fitzgerald of the Vandals can also be credited for a share in popularization with pop punk at the end of the years 1990, thanks to its “stable” of groups to the involving airs, to begin with Blink 182 before they pass to MCA, The Ataris (which also left Kung Fu for a major), Antifreeze, MI6, or the Israeli quartet of Haïfa Useless I.D., even if these groups are remained more underground .

Certain punk groups born in second half of the years 1980, in particular Screeching Weasel and The Queers, with the less politicized attitude and more jokers that the majority of the punks groups of then, are sometimes introduced like the very first groups of pop punk. More especially as Ben Weasel and Joe King, their respective singers, never hesitated to show very critical punk Street and glorification of the violence of class which often accompanies it. The line from which these two groups result goes up until the turning of years 1970/1980 and with the Ramones and the Descendants and them Punk rock'n'roll full with imagination, sometimes qualified the English “ bubblegum ”, or group The Buzzcocks which chose more sentimental topics coupled to less rough melodies for some their songs. Beside the hardcore which held the punk scene throughout the years 1980, these groups with eccentric tendencies, among which one can still quote the Dead Milkmen, constituted a minority current which knew to survive, for example at the Lillingtons (1996-2001, reformed beginning 2006), whose Fat Mike said of their album Death By Television which it was the best the pop album punk one of all times, and groups it which succeeded their separation, Teenage Bottlerocket.

The pop punk one, such as one hears this term today, seems to have known its media and commercial apogee during the four or five years which followed the exit of Enema off the State of Blink 182 in 1999, with the signature by majors of groups as has New Found Glory, Fenix*Tx then, a little later, Good Charlotte, Sugarcult, Sum 41, or Bowling for Soup, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Osbourne become of the commercial products to the mode promoted on the music channels and the radios with great listening. At this point in time was born the pop punk term to distinguish these new groups from pop punk traditional. The stress was laid on the melodies, increasingly more pop and easy of access for listeners beginners, words without depth and an attitude a little mocker towards the pop one and in particular the Boys band S. These groups in their majority had never belonged to a punk scene before. They attracted a public of young teenagers, often female, with the antipodes of the values and convictions of the punk scene which, in its majority, saw that of a very evil eye and did not cease being very critical (and scorning) towards the punk pop one

Controversies

Contrary to Green Day or Blink 182 which, if punk had been a nationality, would have been deposed by the base which regards them as apostates and sold ( salt-outs ), Screeching Weasel, Diesel Servant boy or The Queers, did not suffer from this phenomenon of massive rejection, because they remained underground : one could advance the assumption that the repulsion tested towards thepunk one and its representatives by the punk public are, at least partially, nourished by the phenomena of mediatization and Marchandisation of the aforesaid groups, with the contempt of punk, basically élitiste ethics and communautarist (in his attachment with the “ underground ” and its refusal to be denatured and of the dilution of its identity by too many external influences and especially coming from musical currents general public), the members of the scene, traditionally hostile with the “ mainstream ” and anticonsumerist, being always prompt to declad the charges of “ selling-out ”. Moreover, the use of the qualifier punk for a musical genre not having jointly ethical and cultural referents (“C It Yourself”, individualism, anarchism, etc) appears to the fans of punk, who are considered the agents of the term and his heritage, like particularly disrespectful and even insulting.

In order to see there more clearly, perhaps would then be necessary it to distinguish at least two types of pop punk:

  • the first, gathering The Clean, Screeching Weasel, the Descendants, The Lillingtons & Co. , would be a sub-genus of the Punk, in what it takes part in the underground , and recognizes ethics and the values and ideals of this movement. It is the most melody branch and on the lightest subjects. To listen to these groups, of which some are even regarded as worships, does not constitute a sign of infamy in the punk medium, contrary to those of the second category.
  • the second, labels under whom are arranged Blink 182, New Found Glory and their epigones, would be a kind with share , distinct from the Punk (and even rather a branch of the pop) although they assert to make them-even punk-rock'n'roll. The groups which are in the beginning (Green Day in particular) formed part, at one time, the scene Punk. Pop-punk would be then a media name of suitability applied to a musical kind (and not to a cultural movement) by contagion (and undoubtedly also by ignorance of the differences between pop punk and punk pop). It is this musical genre which deserves name punk pop which is preferred by the members of the punk scene because it indicates more clearly than the groups concerned are not punk any more with pop tendency, but many groups of pop, mainstream , simply having a sound more saturated and rates/rhythms and agreements pointing out, for the philistines, the punk one. And it makes it possible to make to pop punk its noble letters within the scene underground .

The fringes more the purists of the punk public tend to extend the pop qualifier punk one to most of the punk scene, in particular Californian, years 1990, including groups like Jawbreaker (regarded as a headlight group of the kind for the middle of the years 1990), No Uses For has Name or Millencolin in the batch. Groups such as The Lawrence Arms or Dillinger Four, whose sound is in the line of Jawbreaker, are often perceived like a variety of pop-punk of the Midwest. It is necessary to keep in mind that these purists make the distinction between pop well punk and punk pop and do not regard or any more Green Day or Blink 182 as groups of Punk rock'n'roll.

The current scene

After a significant retreat of the kind (competed with by the emergence of the new scene Emo like musical tendency to mode recovered by the majors and MTV), marked by the separation of Blink 182 in 2005, surprising it turning metal of Sum 41 on the album: Chuck , the turn even more pop, even in extreme cases of the variety, Good Charlotte, a pop punk new wave seems to emerge around groups like Simple plan, The All-American Rejects (that Ben Weasel appreciates however much), Fall Out Boy, Motion City Soundtrack, Panic! At the Disco music, Yellowcard, Matchbook Lovesong or Never Heard Off It for the new continent and The Donots, Minimum Serious, Melody Fall, Maximyantom Thunder Rays or Large Bastard Deluxe for the Europe. The current trend for the majority of these groups is to use in their cds samples new wave near to the aero-rock'n'roll, at the beginning or the end of each music, forts far away from punk but close to a more modern rock'n'roll.

Contrary to Green Day, of which the roots and the influences plunge still deeply in the punk scene, these new groups have a sound much more pop, less saturated, even more radio-friendly and a spirit and a style which does not have more anything to see with the Punk, nor even with the pop punk one. Good Charlotte or Sum 41 represented already this case of figure. The voices of the singers are soft at the point to seem female sometimes and the words, practically purged be delirious “scato”, “sexo”, “banked-up bed”, etc, are much closer to the new wave Emo, but without will mascara nor grinding black clothing. Its serious tone and its tendencies to lamentations teenagers on the lost loves replaced the merry, farceuses and shone upon compositions origins. That reveals in a way even more shouting the inadequate character of punk pop name for these groups.

Pop the punk traditional one is however always dynamic within the scene underground , with groups like The Lillingtons/Teenage Bottlerocket, The Briefs or The Marked Men, and certain veterans groups continue to leave the albums more or less regularly, like ALL/Descendants or the Vandals. Recently the term buzzpop made its appearance on the other side of the Atlantic like alternative name for pop the punk not-commercial one.
