Format of the emission
Contrary to much of emissions, Pop Idol was not created by producers of television but by the Impresario Simon Fuller, in 1998. The boom of the Téléréalité to the ends of the year 1990 led to the final format of the emission, while injecting elements of the variety programmes of the years 1970.
The success of Pop Idol is partly due to the broad recourse to the interactivity, with votes of televiewers per telephone, textos, the “red button” of the Digital television or by the vote on Internet. The first final of Pop Idol in February 2002 was the occasion to beat the record of votes for a television program with the the United Kingdom, by doing one of the most profitable programs of ITV1.
The series of emissions begin with hearings in various cities from the country, the competitors occurred in front of four sworn (Pete Waterman, Simon Cowell, Nicki Chapman and Neil " Dr" Fox). The poor singers often exposed themselves to sour criticisms of sworn, in particular those of Simon Cowell, whose discussed opinions also made it famous in American Idol .
Once finished hearings, the emission moved with the Criterion Theater, where new hearings made it possible to reduce the group to 50. Then, the 50 competitors took the way of a studio of television where they were divided into five group of ten which were to present a song accompanied by a piano. Sworn emitted an opinion but the final choice was spring of televiewers. Two additional singers were also fished out.
Finally, at the time of a great weekly show, the candidates were to only occur as a public, accompanied by a group by musicians. Sworn still an opinion emitted there but the public was only decision maker. The candidate having received less votes being eliminated, so on until there remains nothing any more but the winner. It is important to announce that the artists were obliged to take again an existing work and did not have the right to propose original compositions.
Results & to become emission

In spite of success, the emission stopped after the second season. However, its impact was intense and led FremantleMedia to develop the concept in the whole world, with currently 50 versions diffused in 110 countries.
