Poolesville (Maryland)

Poolesville is a city of the Comté of Montgomery to the Maryland with a population of approximately 5000 people in 2000. She holds her surname Poole.

History

In 1760, the brothers John Poole, Sr. and Joseph Poole, Sr. 160 acres (65 km ²) in the zone acquérirent which is currently Poolesville. 33 years later, John Poole, Jr. used 15 acres (60 m ²) of which he had inherited his father to build a log blind and subdivided the remainder, selling portions to other merchants. It is the beginning of Poolesville. The city was built-in 1867.

During the American Civil War, the military leader of the Union realized that the fords of Potomac returned Washington, D.C exposed to the attacks. At certain time of the year the fords are if not very deep that thousands of troops were moved with Darnestown (Maryland) and Poolesville. The body of observation was placed just outside Poolesville and of the soldiers were posted in front of the river to prevent possible incursions of Condédéré into Maryland. During the winter of 1861-1862, it is estimated that 20.000 troop of the Union were stationed around the city. No battle occurred in Poolesville; however, infamous the Bataille of Ball' S Bluff was held on October 21st, 1861 near the city. Hundreds of soldiers of the Union were killed in this battle which was badly directed by an inexperienced general of the Union.

Government

Poolesville is directed by 5 police chiefs elected for a 4 years mandate. Those are not paid. They choose among them a president and a vice-president. A person in charge of the city is in charge of the operations days after days. The six Councils and Commissions assist the police chiefs: commission of Planning, the Council of the parks, the Electoral calendar, the Draft board of the texts, the Council of the calls of zoning, and Commission of ethics.

According to a census of 2000, there are 5151 people with Poolesville, including 1601 households, and 1402 families residing in the city.

On the 1601 households, 56,8% have a child of less than 18 years, 75,6% are married couples, 9,0% do not have husbands present, and 12,4% are not families. 9,3% of these households are made of a person including 2,0% of a person of 65 or more.

The Middle Age of the population is 35 years. For 100 women it there 96,5 men. For 100 women of 18 or more, there are 94,2 men.
