The village of Pontigny was the framework, at the beginning of the 20th century, of an important intellectual movement, the Décades of Pontigny. They were meetings, during the summer, of intellectuals of very diverse horizons, received within the green framework of the Abbaye of Pontigny by its owner of the time, Paul Desjardins. Between 1910 and 1939, all that France counted of writer S, Historien S, Philosophe S etc came, one year or the other, in Pontigny; inter alia, Bachelard, Charles Of the Boss, Gide, Groethuysen, Koyré, Malraux, Gabriel Marcel, Martin of Gard, Oppenheimer, Sartre, Valéry, Wells. The writer Henry de Montherlant, the philosopher Vladimir Jankélévitch and others marked the movement, which continued after the death of Paul Desjardins by the Conferences of Cerisy. The inspiration of Paul Desjardins was the Recluses of Port-Royal-of-Fields.

Others

The monastic field, out the church, belongs since 2003 to the Area Burgundy which on sale gives it in 2006. This sale is not concluded at November 7th, 2006.

Personalities related to the commune

  • Paul Desjardins (philosopher), professor at the teacher training school of Sevres, philosophical, director of the union: FOR the TRUTH, buys with Pontigny the monastic buildings. As from 1905, it founds talks there gathering the intellectual and literary elite (André Gide, François Mauriac, Roger Martin of Gard, André Maurois, Paul Valéry etc) taking part in the Décades, animated of a humanistic and peaceful ideal. Paul Desjardins dies in 1940, it is buried in the cemetery of Pontigny.
