Pontifical university Urbaniana

The pontifical Université Urbaniana is an institute of higher learning of the Roman Catholic church specialized in the training of the clergy missionary and the students coming from the territories known as of mission : it has its seat with Rome, on the hill of the Janicule.

History

The Université Urbaniana comes from the Collège missionary of Propaganda Fide , founded in 1624 by the Spanish prelate Juan Bautista Vives there Marja, with other representatives of the movement missionary of the Church of Rome of which holy Giovanni Leonardi: the purpose of it was on the one hand to train the secular missionaries AD gentes and to contribute to remake the unit of the full communion between the Roman apostolic seat and the Protestant churches and orthodoxe, and on the other hand, to study the languages and the cultures of the people of the world.

The college was in the old man Palais Ferratini , on the place of Spain, and the training of the students étiat entrusted to the Théatin S. the college was high with the row of pontifical Athénée by the pope Urbain VIII in the bubble Immortalis Dei Filius of the 1627, which gave him, like the archigymnase of Rome (current the Université of Sapienza), the right to confer the titles of doctorate in Philosophie and Théologie: in the honor of the pope, the athenaeum took the name of Collège Urbano , which will give the current name of Urbaniana .

The November 2nd 1926, the pope Pie XI made transfer the college on Janicule and in 1933 one inaugurated the new seat of the Athenaeum, built for this purpose; on this occasion the Institut missionary was founded, which accepted the right to give the academic titles in the disciplines relating to the mission and the right of the Church (in 1986 the Institute is subdivided in Faculty of Canon law and Missiologie ).

The institute receives from the pope Jean XXIII, the title of pontifical Université in the Motu landlord Fidei Propagandae of October 1st 1962.

The cardinal prefect of the Congrégation for the evangelization of the people has office the title of Grand Chancellor of this university.
