Pontifical House

The pontifical house is an office of the Roman Curie. It is responsible for the pontifical Famille and the papal Chapelle.

The loads of the pontifical house are defined by the apostolic constitution Pastor Bonus. It occupies moreover visitors in Rome who wish an audience with the pope.

The members of this department can be the palatine Cardinaux, the patriarchs, the assistants with the papal throne, the bishops of the curia, the princes assistants with the papal throne, the secretaries and the assessors of the crowned congregations, the protonotaires apostolic, the generals and procurateurs of religious ordrs, the consistoriaux lawyers, the Chambellan S and the Monseigneur S.

The size of the pontifical house was reduced of much in 1968 following the reforms of the pope Paul VI. Among the offices having survived these cuts, there are the Théologien of the pontifical house, the Prédicateur of the pontifical house, the Gentilshommes of the pope, the pontifical Majordome and the prefect of the apostolic Palais.

The prefecture of the pontifical house manages also the pontifical Appartements and the Barberini Villa in the town of Castel Gandolfo. The current prefect of the pontifical house is James Michael Harvey, named in 1998 to replace Dino Monduzzi. The assistant prefect was before Stanislaw Dziwisz, named cardinal in 2006. The private secretary of the pope is Mgr Georg Gänswein.
