Pontien
Pontien is the 18th Pape of the Catholic church.
He is elected bishop of Rome in July 230. Of Roman origin it enters at once in conflict, as its two predecessors with Hippolyte which has the considerable support on the one hand the faithful ones of the city. Pontien is confronted in 235 with a new persecution with the accession with the throne of the emperor Maximin Ier and the beginning of the period of military anarchy which characterizes IIIe century. The two rivals are off-set together in Sicily what will reconcile them.
The September 28th 235, first date which it is possible to determine with a whole certainty in the history of papacy, Pontien gives up officially its load and Hippolyte with his dispute. Pontien dies a little later the October 30th 235 and its body is buried, the same day as that of Hippolyte, the August 13rd 236 in the Catacombe of Saint-Calixte inaugurating a tradition which will continue until Eutychien. He would have been condemned to the forced labors in the mines of Sicily.
He is buried in the Crypte of the Popes of the Catacombe of Saint-Calixte.
