Ponthion

Ponthion is a common French, located in the department of the Marne and the area Champagne-Ardenne.

History

Ponthion was a high place of the time mérovingienne, sheltering a palate. It is which Pépin III (Pip the Brief) met the Pope Etienne III on January 6th, 754

In Ponthion a villa of the Carolingian sovereigns was. It is there that Pépin the Brief, proclaimed king of the Francs into 751, accepted into 754 the pope Etienne II come to seek the alliance of the Francs against Lomabrds which threatened the pontifical capacity in Italy. The sacring of Pip by the pope, the same year, with St Denis, precedes that of Charlemagne as emperor in year 800. The agreement of Ponthion is at the origin of the ascensio of the Carolingian dynasty.

The Saint-Symphorien church of Ponthion is classified historic building. It was built at the 12th century and was renovated at the 15th century. It is classified historic building since the 12/23/1924 and is property of the commune. Renovated recently, work is not finished but the church found a very beautiful external appearance.
