History
Origins of the name of the City
Combault (Combellis) of the Gallic one “ combe ” = clearing and of its derivative “ combelle ” = ravelled, this appears well to have been, indeed, the characteristic of the place. Pontault (Pontelz) of Gallo-Roman or frank “the pont ” = bridge and of the Germanic one “ elze ” = river, therefore a bridge on the Ru of Morbras. At that time, about 1078, Pontelz decided Ponteauz, from there would come the pronunciation which arrived to us. On old documents one finds various orthographes : Pontos, Pontauz in Brye… Berchères comes from “ bercheria ” = sheep-folds, and Pontillault is a diminutive of Pontault. It should be noted that these characteristics make rather difficult the pronunciation of the name of this city, it would seem besides that a petition aiming at modifying the noun of the commune was initiated in 1984.
Blasonnement
The Blazon testifies perfectly to its history. The elements which compose it were inherited the principal characters who marked the development of the commune. Thus this one comprises in field, weapons of Strainer (Lays Blanchet which was secretary of the king and lord of Pontault), lords of the Tail-in-Brie of 1364 to 1410, whose possessions included/understood at the same time Pontault, Pontillaut and Berchères. One finds a seal preserved at the Public records with these same armorial bearings. The lords de Combault, connects puînée of the Bourbon, carried them, the three merlettes in the center of the ecu as a sign of their participation in the crusade. The ecu is stamped mural crown of gold with three crenelated towers (symbol which the guardian Greek goddesses of the cities carried). The right-hand man (dextrochère) armed with money, heritage of the Lefebvre Marshal, duke of Dantzig, separately represented, underlines a certain warlike character then. Lastly, this ecu is surrounded by two branches of oak pointing out the regional flora, and the power of the local lord.
Evolution of the commune
The commune was formed in 1839 by fusion of the communes of Pontault and Combault. One of glories of Combault was to have had the Marshal François Joseph Lefebvre for mayor between 1813 and 1820. Lefebvre was the husband of Mrs Sans-Gêne, Catherine Hubscher. The evolution as of the commune since the beginning of the XXe century is typical suburban cities of the suburbs Is of Paris. The first Lotissement S in the commune of Pontault-Combault go back to 1904, date on which the lawyer Reitlinger, owner of the castle of Combault, sells the first grounds vis-a-vis the station with a property developer. In front of the success of this first sale, it yields into 1906 to the Bernheim brothers the 70 remaining hectares of its field, of which a part returning to the allotment of the Valley of the Lily of the valley. The first sales start in 1910.
During all the inter-war period, these suburban zones constitute new districts which give an urban aspect gradually with what were yet only 2 villages : in addition to the district of the station, they are the Valley of the Lily of the valley or the Bouquet of Pontault. But these suburban districts are essentially " allotments défectueux" : i.e. without real development, with the summary grid system and without connection with the electricity or sewer, water supply networks. It is necessary to wait the years 1950 in general to see a real development of these districts, with the assistance of the municipality. But at that time, the city undergoes a housing shortage again. Association Emmaüs makes build in 1954 an allotment of residences of first need, which exists toujours : it is the district of the Daisies. Later, at the end of the years 1960, a " small Great unit " is built in the center of the city on the initiative of social lessor OCIL (employers' organism in charge of the collection of the 1%).
The commune, which counted 15.000 inhabitants twenty-five years ago, largely exceeded today the figures fixed by SDRIF. In fact the great units are at the origin of this demographic explosion, but two great suburban zones of 1.200 residences each one. They consumed as well surface as the city, located in one of famous “the zones pyjamas ”, starts to miss constructible grounds.
