Pont transporter of Marseilles
The Transporter bridge of Marseilles was a building overhanging the Old man-Port.
History
In France, one grants the invention of the bridge to transporter with Ferdinand Arnodin. This system of bridge has as an interest not to disturb the sea traffic. It consists in making pass from a bank to the other a nacelle suspended to the metal reinforcement of the bridge. The transporter of Marseilles was of the type “with counterweight and articulations”. It was built in 19 month to connect the quays of Joliette and New Bank. It was inaugurated the December 15th 1905.
Description
the transporter was composed of two 86,60 nacelle and apron, height meters pylons connecting the two pylons, which made the shuttle and ensured the transit.
In top, there was a fish restaurant where the Bouillabaisse and the Langouste S were with the menu.
End of the transporter
In the Years 1930, it was not used any more but as decoration, following the lack of means to ensure its maintenance.
The August 22nd 1944, the Germans blow up the bridge to block the port, but only the northern pylon falls down in water. The remainder collapses on September 1st, 1945, following the firing of 400 kg explosives.
The transporter in the collective memory
In the spirit of the Marseillais of the time, the transporter bridge was the Eiffel Tower of Marseilles. Others regarded it as a waste, and one saw certain painters omitting to represent this cluster of scrap on a painting illustrating the Old man-Port.
