Pont du Mont-Blanc

The bridge of Mont Blanc is a road Pont on the the Rhone, located in the Canton of Geneva, in Suisse.

Situation

The bridge of Mont Blanc is the bridge located upstream on the Rhone, directly at its exit of the Lac Léman of which it marks the end. Connecting two principal road axes out of two banks of the city - street of Chantepoulet - street of Mont Blanc for Right Bank and avenue Pictet-of-Rochemont - Gustave-Ador quay on left bank -, it is often saturated with circulation.

History

The first bridge of Mont Blanc east built in Sheet in 1862. It is then 250 meters long, for 16 meters broad, and consists of 12 Travée built S. Mal and badly adapted to the loads which it must support, some of its flagstones break in the passing of too heavy vehicles.

When the city decides, at the beginning of the Années 1900, of the change of the engines of the Tramway S following the electrification of the network, a public contest is open to carry out a complete repair of the Charpente like to a general reinforcement of the structure. Six projects are filed in and the final choice will be given to an alternative in Béton for contractual total costs of 766.180 Swiss francs.

Work begins on January 5th, 1903 and is carried out without total interruption of the traffic. The length of the bridge is increased by two meters and its width of three meters, thus allowing the installation of a double track of tram the center of the bridge. Carried out in three phases, the work is completed on August 19th, 1903 and the bridge is opened with circulation on October 31st, 1903, with two months in advance on planning.

In 1965, the bridge is again widened to reach a width of 26,8 meters, thus allowing the construction of a roadway of 20 meters and two Trottoir S of three meters.

In December 2001, a pedestrian passage located under the first arch of the bridge side Right Bank is inaugurated to connect the quay of Bergues to the quay of Mont Blanc by avoiding the road crossroads. The passage is mainly made up of a Ponton floating in single Acier in its kind.

Festive and artistic use

All along the bridge, of the fixed flag-holders are aligned on the two sides. If the Flag X Swiss and Genevese are generally alternate, certain demonstrations present various flags either official, or artistic.

Place privileged to assist with the Fireworks Festivals of Geneva, it is also the crossing point of the Lake Parade.

Current structure

The bridge is built on seven principal sheet beams for an overall length of 252 meters. The height of the beams varies from 65 centimetres to 1,7 meter. Its total weight is of: 1176 tons of metal of which: 1056 tons for the metal frame.
