Pont de Verdun (Angers)
The Pont of Verdun is a bridge crossing the Maine in the center of Angers making it possible to connect the downtown area to the Doutre.
It is the oldest passage from one bank to another of the Maine since the Gallic time.
In 1028, the count of Anjou, Foulque Nerra, makes rebuild out of stone this bridge which spans Maine between the city and the island of Savatte on other bank. It takes the name of " Large pont".
There existed also formerly the " small pont" who allowed to connect the island of Savatte to Doutre. These two bridges gave access to two banks of Maine on both sides of the old island of Savatte, before the latter is connected by filling of the small arm of Maine, also called " channel of Tanneries" in Doutre in 1867.
With the development of the city, the " large pont" called the " bridge of the center" is again rebuilt during XIXesiècle.
The " bridge of Center" , " will be famous; bridge of Verdun" with the erection of the statue of the Lieutenant Colonel Beaurepaire, officer of the French Army, died in 1792 with Verdun at the time of the rendering of this city vis-a-vis the Prussians. (It was not a question yet of commemorating terrible and bloody the Bataille of Verdun of 1916).
