Pont Verrazano

The bridge Verrazano is a Suspended bridge of the town of New York to the the United States, connecting the districts of Brooklyn to Staten Island. He was baptized in the honor of the explorer Italy N Giovanni da Verrazano, the first European to have discovered the site of New York and the Rivière Hudson.

The bridge is the property of the town of New York, exploited by the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority , a subsidiary company of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York. It is the last realization due to Robert Moses, celebrates it New York Parks Commissioner , which a long time wished to create this work to supplement the highway system of which it had itself be the promoter. The bridge was designed by Othmar Amman, which had with its credit the realization of other crossings of the river Hudson (bridge George Washington, Bronx-Whitestone bridge, Triboro bridge and bridge Throgs Neck). Construction began on August 13rd, 1959 and the upper floor opened the November 21st 1964, the labor costs rising to 320 million dollars. The Verrazano bridge was at that time the longest suspended bridge of the world, until in 1981 with the completion of the Pont Humber in England.

In 2005, toll amounted to 9$ for the cars (only paying in direction of Staten Island). One regularly sees appearing the Verrazano bridge in the reports on the Marathon of New York, whose departure takes place with Staten Island. It was also used for turning of the film Saturday Night Fever, in 1977, with John Travolta.
