Pont- of-Salars

Bridge-with-Salars is a common French, located in the department of the Aveyron and the area the Midday-Pyrenees. Its inhabitants is called Salarsipontains.

Geography

Located in the Country of Salars in Lévézou (country of the Lake S 12), this small village offers the happiness of the countryside but auussi the pleasure of the baigniade with its lake of 190 ha. Not far from there another village Rooms-Curan offers to him also estival opportunities like training courses of veils on its immense lake (Pareloup). Pont- of-Salars is crossed by a river: Viaur.

History

Pont- of-Salars is the most important city of Lévézou (with the restricted direction) of many inhabitants. It owes its development with the fact that it is located on a passage of the Viaur facilitated by the construction of the military road (D911) of Montauban at Millau at the 18th century. In fact, the initial borough corresponded to the village of Salars, on the hillock, of which there remains today only its vault (11th century). With the construction of the D911 road, the village developed around the bridge along the road from where its current name.

The origin of the word Salars is unknown. However several assumptions circulate like that making it derive from the word salt, the village being known with the Moyen-âge for the road of the Sel ( salars ) with right-of-way (on the bridge).

Economy

Although the borough benefitted from the passage of the royal road (D911), its economy is sourtout based on agriculture (breeding of bovines, production of cow's milk but also ewe for the manufacture of the Roquefort) and sylviculture. However since the Sixties, the essort of rural tourism with the asset case the lakes made it possible to diversify the economy and to maintain a population in an area having sudden and still undergoing a strong rural migration.

Projects

A deviation of the borough is in project. Work should begin in December 2007 and finish about 2011. This project is of importance, indeed it requires the construction of a viadduc of 54m top for 300m length in order to cross the valley of the Viaur. The deviation will be a 5 km length. Cost of the project: 20 million euros.

Sites

Environ 700 people live the borough itself, the remainder of the population being distributed in the hamlets neighborhood. Most important, in particular on the historical level are Méjanès, isolated Puech Ventoux and especially Saint-Georges and Camboulas, hamlets but remainder known for their religious sites and castle.
the Chapelle Our-Lady-of-Salars is very expensive in the middle of the salarsipontains which viennet to request the Virgin there.
the Lake of Bridge-of-Salars and the Lac of Bage attract many touristes : dependant on the importance of the city (supermarket, trade, banks).
the lake of Bridge-of-Salars is bordered of two camp-sites, of a nautical base as well as municipal beach (Rouselleries). The Lake Bage being interdict to the bathe (important pumping of EDF) is snuffed fishermen.

Emile Pouget: Revolution naire and Trade unionist
Alain Pichon, general adviser since 1994 (and mayor of 1995 to 2001) is a known figure. For several years it has resolutely engaged on the file of deviation of the village (required by safety reasons road); the file carried by the general advice of Aveyron was validated by the standing committee in April 2006 for an amount of 20 million euros.
