Pont- channel

A tubular bridge is a Pont which allows a navigable River, generally a channel, to cross an obstacle in hollow, a valley or a small valley generally. Another use of the tubular bridge is the access by the upstream to a Ship lift.

A tubular bridge allows the passage of the Navigation the top of a Rivière (the most frequent case), of a Route, a Railway or various other obstacles. The longest tubular bridge of Europe is located in Germany at Magdeburg above the Elba. It is 918 m long and détrôné in 2003 that of Briare which held this record since 1896 with 662 Mr.

There exists also a tubular bridge turning in England, with Barton, close to Manchester. It makes it possible the Canal of Bridgewater (built by the Duc of Bridgewater) to cross the ship canal of Manchester. The United Kingdom enorgueillit also to have the most tubular bridge of Europe, with Pontcysyllte, the Wales. It dominates the valley of the Dee of almost 40 m since 1805.
