Poma 2000

The Poma 2000 is a system of Transport guided light automatic derived from the technology of the Funiculaire and developped at the point by the company Pomagalski.

Poma 2000 is operational in the town of Laon to connect the district of the station and thehigh one since 1989. Three vehicles are simultaneously in service, each one moving to 35 km/h and being able to contain 30 passengers. The total way lasts 3,5 mn. The exploitation is ensured by the Urban transport Laonnois (TUL).

Poma 2000 has a system of traction by cables: the cabins are fixed on a cable by a grip located under the cabin. Two loops of cable (one by section) always turning in the same direction are pulled by engines located in the stations. Poma 2000 circulates on a single track, except for an avoidance in the middle of each section as at the central station (Be worth), which allows the crossing of the cabins. With each stop the cabins all are simultaneously in a station and the grip slackens the cable to take again the piece of cable which will lead it to the following station.

The POMA 2000 replaces old a Tramway with toothed rack dating from the end of the 19th century (brought into service on July 9th 1899) which had been withdrawn from circulation on January 27th 1971 for safety reason, after 72 years of service.
