Campus

The School is located on the campus of the Université of Montreal on the northern face of the Mount-Royal . Its principal house is highest located campus. In 2003, three new houses are in construction.

  • House Andre-Aisenstadt, divided with the University of Montreal
  • House Queen-Marie
  • House Jean-Brilliance
  • House J. - Armand-Bomber

Organization

Bernard Lamarre is president of the Polytechnic school “Poly” is one of the three larger faculties of the largest engineering to the Canada and with the Quebec. Since its foundation in 1873, this institution of teaching of French language form of the Engineer S qualified and contributes to the scientific and economic wellbeing of the area. Its graduates took share with the majority of great work of genius of Quebec at the 20th century like the construction of the dam. Today, the School is with the avant-garde of engineering in fields like the Aéronautique, the Informatique, the Télécommunications, the Biotechnologie, the Nanotechnologie, the Environnement and several other technologically advanced sectors.

The seven departments of Polytechnic offer 11 programs leading to the title of graduate in engineering (B. Ing.). It is:

The School also offers a certain number of programs of certificates which, cumulated, can lead to the rank of graduate in sciences (B.Sc.).

The Polytechnic school of Montreal is recognized for its dynamic research which accounted for 35% of its budget for 1998 - 1999 (26,9 million CAD). Its 40 research units receive more than 20% of the funds and the contracts of research in science applied to the Quebec.

Students and professors

Poly counted 5.713 students in the quarter of winter 2003, including 1.198 women and 4.515 men. Approximately 4.000 of them continued studies with the first cycles, the 1.700 others being with the higher cycles. It decrees each year approximately 600 baccalaureats, 200 controls and 50 doctorates.

The School employs 220 professors and 150 researchers.

Life coed

The life coed polytechnician is very active. The students of the first cycle are represented by the Association of the students of Polytechnic, the AEP, which chapeaute a big number of committees. Several categories exist:

Among the most active committees with the intern, one counts:

  • Hello-Poly, Committee of humor which produces a spectacle of humor by session and, recently, the humorous bulletin of news " The 3/20".
  • Poly-Party, charged with the organization of the evenings coeds and known for her biannual Beach Party of Popa.
  • Poly-Theater, a theater company which organizes between two and four representations per annum, of which recently one in France.
  • Poly-Photo, committee which is interested in photography and what turn around, and which covers the Polytechnique events.
  • the Polyscope, newspaper of the students of the first cycle, a weekly magazine based in 1967 and recognized on the campus of the University for its mood squeaking, its words crossed, its section culture and its policy of publication of style “babillard”.
  • Poly-TV, which is interested in the production of television, which covers the events by filming them and which offers services of video assembly and loans of video equipment.
  • Polyrad, radio coed diffused on the campus of the school and which has an significant amount of CD that it lends to the students of the school.
  • Technical Madness, the scientific camp of the Polytechnic school of Montreal.
  • Polysphère, the committee environment of the School.

Each program of genius has also a committee with the education, which defends the rights of the students of their respective program, while organizing social and educational events (like delegation sending to congresses, in particular in Chemical engineering, Industriel and Geological) in order to bring together the students and to foam their feeling of membership of their respective discipline.

The techic companies, as for them, allow the students implied to work on projects like a solar car, a car of the " type; Formule" , of the planes, of the boats, the submarines with human motricity and more still.

History

The Polytechnic school of Montreal (named thus in reference to the Polytechnic school of Paris) was founded in 1873 to teach the Technical design and the others useful Arts. At the beginning, teaching was given in a converted house. Thereafter, she moved on the street Saint-Denis for finally establishing the School on her current site on the campus of the Université of Montreal. The original building was increased in 1975 then still in 1989. In 2002, for lack of place, the department of electronic engineering and data processing had to move with 5th and 6th floors of the old building of the École of the high commercial studies of Montreal. Three new houses were put in building site in 2003.

Until 1960, the main mission of the School was the formation of Engineer S. However, starting from 1959, research took an increasingly important place, until doing of it today one of most important the institutions of Recherche in genius with the Canada.

The December 6th 1989, 14 coeds were killed at the time of the slaughter of the Polytechnic school.
