Polyp (zoology)
See also: Polyp
The polyp is one of the two forms which the Cnidaires can take (the pelagic form being the jellyfish). It is about a stage Asexué, sessile and benthic (near to sea-beds).
The polyps are of cylindrical form and have on a side a pedicle connecting them to the substrate, a reinflated gastric colony and other a mouth surrounded by tentacles.
The wall consists of a Ectoderme and a Endoderme separated by the Mésoglée.
The Ectoderm consists of only one layer of cells secreting a Mucus. Their base has longitudinal smooth myofibrilles from where them name theglandular ones
Between these cells, one finds cells sensitive neuropithéliales in spindle with an external tactile silk. Their base is in connection with an myo-epithelial cell or nervous cells by ramified filaments.
