Polydactyly

La' polydactyly is defined as the presence of one or more Doigt S additional (S) in the level of the Main or of one or more Orteil S in the level of the foot.
This Malformation known for a long time since is already described in the Bible.
The
polydactyly of the main'
is most frequent of malformations of the hand.
One classically distinguishes the polydactyly pre axial from the axial polydactyly post although some dispute this classification. Polydactyly is a characteristic of several chromosomal diseases or genetics.

Axial polydactyly post

Defined as the existence of the additional fingers on the side of the Ulna or toe on the side of the Fibula. It can be complete: presence of a well formed finger or more rudimentaire.
It is more frequent, and less specific than axial pre polydactyly.

According to an American study, axial polydactyly post isolated is more frequent at the black population (1 per 100) and would be transmitted on a mode dominating. It more often reaches the men than the women.

Axial pre polydactyly

Defined as the existence of the additional fingers on the side of the Radius (it enters this case within the framework of the anomalies of the radial axis) or of toe on the side of the tibia.

Diagnosis

Is made at the time of the echography first or second quarters. The diagnosis is easier in the case of polydactyly of the hand than of the foot. The diagnosis depends of course on many parameters influencing the quality of echography: Position of the fetus, quantity of Amniotic liquid, ponderal overload of the patient, echogenicity of the fabric S, type of finger surnuméraire.
When the diagnosis is established, it is imperative to proceed to a meticulous search for other anomalies being able to enter a particular pathology. The long bones all will be measured.

Etiology

The interrogation of the parents will seek the concept of finger additional in the family or history of additional ablation of finger in the enfance.
The additional investigations will be indicated according to the clinical history and of the result of echography made in a Center of Prenatal diagnosis.
The following table summarizes principal pathologies associated with a polydactyly.
