Pollor

Polleur (in Walloon Poleur ) is a section of the common Belgian of Theux located in Walloon region in the Province of Liege.

It was a commune with whole share before the fusion of the communes of 1977.

History

Philippe de Commynes told in its chronicles that the army of Charles Bold the was forced to leave the country because, the coming cold, the hunger was felt there and the wine froze as much as it had to be cut out with the axe. The duke Charles had just set fire to Liege on November 3rd 1468.

At the time of the Revolution inhabitant of Li2ege, the delegates of the five banns of the marquisat of Franchimont met August 26th 1789 with the January 23rd 1791, in Polleur initially, then with Theux and then with Spa: in twenty-five meetings, Franchimontois proclaimed a Declaration of the Human rights and the Citizen (September 16th 1789) more radical than that which the France adopted then.

Event

The festival of the Cuckoo: each even years, at the end of July, the last groom of the year is thrown in the water of the Hoëgne. The history tells that a fantastic animal (the “animal the Stannous one”, kind of centaur) threatened the inhabitants. The peasants decided one night to capture it. All left in forest, except the young groom who preferred better occupation… The animal was captured, but, after having judged it in front of a popular court, one punishes the “cuckoo” (for couard) while plunging it in the river.

Saint-Jacob church

The characteristic of this church is to have a twisted Clocher, it is a composite arrow, on a square basis leaves a part orthogonal and twisted which was built voluntarily twisted and which is connected another right octagonal part has.

Pont du Coucou

A pretty Romance bridge crosses Hoëgne, it has this place which place has the festival of the Cuckoo. On the bridge one can see two statuettes representing, the Christ, and the Virgin Mary.
