Policy of Tuvalu

The Tuvalu are a parliamentary Régime where the Head of the State, the Queen of England, is represented by a General governor.

Become independent of the the United Kingdom in October 1978, the Tuvalu are a constitutional monarchy which rests on a Parliament monocaméral (the Fale I Fono) of 15 members, elected officials every four years. The Government is composed of a Prime Minister, elected by a majority of Fale I Fono, and to five ministers. There are no organized political parties.

General elections took place the July 25th 2002, with for result the nomination of Saufatu Sopoanga like Prime Minister for Tuvalu, to replace Koloa Talake. Then, Apisai Ielemia became Prime Minister for Tuvalu on August 14th, 2006. The August 25th 2004, the Sopoanga government loses a Vote of distrust carried out by the chief of the opposition Apisai Ielemia. Sopoanga resigns of the station of Prime Minister and his function of deputy the August 28th, leading to a by-election for the district of Nukufasatau, which will be gained by Sopoanga the October 7th. During substitution, the temporary government, directed by Toafa, was able to regain the confidence of the majority, in particular while making return a member of the Parliament, Sio Patiale, on leave disease in New Zealand, in time for the election. At a meeting of the Parliament the October 11th, Maatia Toafa was elected Prime Minister with 8 votes against 7, with Sopoanga as Deputy Prime Minister. Only the other candidate for this station was Elisala Pita, become thus the chief of the opposition.

Legislative elections took place Thursday August 3rd 2006: they gave tight and unfavourable results to the First outgoing minister, Maatia Toafa which was however re-elected in its district. But four deputies and members of the outgoing government, whose former minister for Finances, were beaten. 6.000 voters went to the ballot boxes to elect the 15 members of the Local parliament, the Fale I Fono. The August 14th, Apisai Ielemia is invested at the post of Prime Minister by the Fale I Fono.
