The institutions of Mali are defined by the Constitution of 1992 melting the third republic.

The President of the Republic, Head of the State, is elected for 5 years by the universal direct suffrage. Amadou Toumani Touré was elected in 2002.

The Prime Minister and the ministers are named by the President of the Republic. Modibo Sidibé was named in October 2007; he was general secretary of the Presidency before. He has just formed his government, including 23 new members

The Parliament consists of only one room, the National Assembly. The deputies are elected for a 5 years mandate by the universal direct suffrage. The last election took place in 2002. Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta was president of the National Assembly of 2002 to 2007. Following the legislative elections of 2007, a new office is set up chaired by Dioncounda Traoré.

After the inversion of the dictatorial mode of Foamed Traoré and the institution of the third republic in 1992, the multi-party system is in force in Mali. There exists more than 80 political parties.

Elections

Legislative elections of 1992

They take place the March 9th 1992 and are marked by the victory of ADEMA/PASJ.

Presidential election of 1992

With resulting from the second turn the April 26th 1992, Alpha Oumar Konaré is elected with 69,01% of the voices vis-a-vis Tiéoulé Mamadou Konaté. He becomes the first president of the 3rd épublique one.

Presidential election of 1997

The May 17th 1997, Alpha Oumar Konaré is re-elected president of the Republic. This election was boycotted by the principal parties of the opposition.

Elections legislative of 1997

The April 13rd takes place the first turn of the legislative elections which will be invalidated by the Constitutional court. New legislative elections take place the July 20th and the August 3rd. Boycotted by the opposition, they are gained by ADEMA/PASJ.

Elections presidential of 2002

The May 12th 2002, Amadou Toumani Touré is elected with the second turn chair Republic with 64,35% of the voices vis-a-vis Soumaïla Cissé.

Elections legislative of 2002

They take place in August 2002. No party has the absolute majority. ADEMA-PASJ is maintained like first political clout of the country by obtaining 51 deputies, followed by RPM of Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta with 46 deputies.

Hope 2002 was composed of the Rassemblement for Mali (RPM, 46 deputies), of the democratic National congress of initiative (CNID, 13 deputies), of the patriotic Mouvement for the revival (MPR, 5 deputies) and of the Gathering for the democracy and work (RDT, 1 deputy).

Alliance alternation and change include/understand the Bloc for the democracy and African integration (BDIA), the Mouvement for independence, the rebirth and African integration (MIRIA), the Union African democratic Sudanese woman-Gathering (US-RDA), the Parti Sudanese progressist (PSP), the Parti for the national rebirth (PARENA) and the Parti ecologist for integration (PEI).

Communal elections of 2004

They take place the May 30th 2004. ADEMA: 28%, URD: 14 % RPM : 13%.

Presidential election of 2007

April 29th, 2007, Amadou Toumani Touré is re-elected with the first turn with 71,20% of the voices, during an election disputed by the principal candidates of the opposition.

The legislative elections of the July 1st, th and 22nd 2007 were marked by the victory of the political parties members of Alliance for the democracy and progress (ADP). The Alliance for the democracy with the African Mali-Party for solidarity and justice (ADEMA/PASJ) becomes again the first political party Malian of many deputies.
