Policoro

Policoro is a common of the Province of Will subdue in the area Basilicate in Italy.

Geography The city of more than 15  000 inhabitants, sees early significant development with more than 14% of new inhabitants each year, that east had with the depopulation of the small villages neighborhood. Being on the Ionian coast, Policoro is very known for its fauna and flora. Site protected by the WWF, the tortoises giant come to deposit their eggs there on these beaches. Near the maritime zone, it there with the drill appelée" it Bosco Pantano" , in which typical plants of the climates umido-moderate can flower without concern inabituellement with the hot and wet climate of the Ionian litoral. The town of Policoro is one of the greatest balneal centers of the area and is provided with tourist structures for an estival stay and open structures of lodging all the year.

The archaeological park is very interesting to visit, it is located behind the national museum of Siritide which protects an important inheritance from objects and remainders of the old city of Siris-Heraclea. In the surroundings of the museum one can find the sanctuary of Demeter and the antiquated temple dedicated to Dionisos dated from VIIe century before J. - C.

History

Policoro is known in Antiquity under the name of Héraclée de Lucanie. It was a Greek colony of rather modest importance, made famous for the battles which opposed Pyrrhus Ier and the Tarentins with the Romans in 280 av. J.C
