Police chief with the armies

Police chiefs with the armies name given to the deputies of the national Convention sent on mission near the armies where they exerted a quasi total control from where them nickname of “proconsuls”.

They had the capacity to relieve of the generals, to make requisitions, to raise extraordinary contributions.

Uniform carried by the police chiefs with the armies

The uniform of the police chiefs to the armies was a blue dress of color with red reverses, on the head it wore a hat of round form decorated of three feathers to the colors blue, white, red, a tri-colored scarf girded their size.

Their actions

Their action was often decisive concerning the victories but also for the defeats, certain police chiefs with the armies showed great qualities to carry out the men or some had a remarkable tactical direction, but others did nothing but increase the disorder and confusion in the various armies in which they were charged to inspect the good performance.

They bore also the name of representatives on mission, but this category contained the police chiefs with the armies as well as the representatives sent by Convention in the various departments.
