The Drapeau of the Luxembourg consists of three equal bands red (Pantone 032C), Blanc He and Bleu sky (Pantone 299C) laid out horizontally. It is similar to the Drapeau of the Netherlands which is less broad and uses a darker blue (marine blue).

Several theories concerning the origins of this flag exist.

  • Beaucoup thinks that the flag of Luxembourg is quite simply copied or derived from that of the Netherlands because of their similaritées striking. Moreover, the two countries were consequently controlled dynasty of the Orange-Nassau of 1815 with 1890.

  • the flag seems to appear for the first time towards 1830 with the Belgian Révolution against Guillaume Ier. Considering that this revolution was supported by most of the Luxembourg population and that the Duchy of Luxembourg, with the exception of the city-garrison of Luxembourg, was under Belgian control , it seems not very probable that the flag is derived from that of the Netherlands.

  • the Armorial bearings of the counts and dukes of Luxembourg are blasonées: Burelé of money and azure, with the Lion crawling of Mouths, crowned, Armed and Lampassé with gold, the tail fourchue and passed in saltire, stitching on the whole. At the same time, Belgium adopted its flag (black, yellow and red) derived from the colors of the Armorial bearings of the Duché of the blasonné Brabant: of sand to the crawling gold lion, armed and lampassé of mouths. Thus it is plausible that the colors red, white and blue of the Luxembourg flag were similarly derived from the armorial bearings of old the counts and dukes of the country.

  • a last assumption is a direct or indirect derivation starting from the flag of France. Until our days this blue, white flag red popular remainder in certain Luxembourg circles as a sign of support for the ideas of the French revolution. To many recoveries during the {XIXe century} these colors were raised to Luxembourg of which amongst other things during the Belgian Revolution. A derivation would thus not be illogical.

In the final analysis it however should be accepted that none as of these theses can be proven, and that several seem probable. It is probable that there will be never an definitive answer concerning this question of the origins of the flag of Luxembourg.

Officially the flag was adopted only in 1972, with the law of the June 23rd and amended in 1993 with that of the July 27th. In October 2006 the Député Luxembourg Michel Wolter announced to want to present a bill to replace the red, white and blue flag by the maritime house of the country.
