Sands of Olonne (in Poitevin-saintongeais Breadths Sands of Oloune ) is a common French, Sous-préfecture of the department of the the Vendée in the area Pays of the Loire. The common one also forms part of the historical Poitou. It is the main city of the Côte of Light, coastal town, resulting from a Spanish colony, Seaside resort, fishing port, trade and pleasure.

History
The history of Sand-in Olonne is related to the world of the sea since the foundation in 1218 of Le Havre of Olonne by Savary Ier de Mauléon, lord of Mauléon, Sénéchal of Poitou and prince de Talmont on a sand cord between Thatch and the Marais of Olonne.-
In 1472, Louis XI separates Sands from Olonne of the town of Olonne.
- At the 17th century, the port of Sands of Olonne is the first port cod-fishing boat of France and account nearly 14.000 inhabitants
- In 1753, Thatch is attached to Sands of Olonne.
- During the French revolution, the city is acquired with the Republic. It is besieged on several occasions during the Guerre of the Vendée and resists thanks to the supply by the sea.
- the February 24th 1809, Battle of Sand-in Olonne between the French and English.
- In 1825, the first establishments of bath appear, the city becomes a seaside resort.
- the December 29th 1866, the railroad arrives at Sands.
- In the night of the 27 with the August 28th 1944, the German army of occupation evacuates the city, leaving destroyed harbor installations and mined beaches.

Tourism
Thanks to its beaches and with its ports, the city exploits since the 19th century a tourist strong potential which generates an activity marked by a strong seasonal variation. In 1900, one counted 35 hotels near the embankment and the private individuals quickly saw the interest to rent whole or part of their houses in summer. Today, the hotel capacity remains important and there are two camp-sites in activity in spite of an exiguous communal territory. The hirings furnished are also very widespread.
Trade
On the territory of the commune, one finds 3 Supermarché S (of which one with Thatch), 3 markets hall (of which one with Thatch) and of many specialized stores. The principal retail parks are the Center (between the Dupont Course and the district of the Passage), the Embankment and the Arago district. The communes bordering exert a strong commercial attraction thanks to their shopping malls made up around hypermarkets.Restoration
Thanks to tourism and the presence of an important population even except season, the city has many restaurants and open bars all the year, mainly on the Embankment, the fishing port and Thatch.

Sand-in Olonne is a city turned towards the sea. A strategic situation which explains the dynamism of its three ports:
- the fishing port, eighth of France, artisanal fishing (Plate S, cuttlefish S, Cod S…) ;
- the commercial port;
- the marina, Port Olona, accommodates many nautical demonstrations of which most prestigious is the Vendée Globe.
The Port of Sand-in Olonne is thus equipped with several headlights, because of its difficult access due to high funds close to the channel of entry: the Headlight of Armandèche, the Headlight of the Bracket, the Headlight of the Barges and the Phare of Thatch say also the tower of Arundel .
The Vendée, ground of Bénéteau and Jeanneau, are the world leader of the nautical industry of pleasure. The basin olonnais accommodates many building sites of which Alubat, Kirié, Alliaura, Océa and Tresco.
