Point-with-Clown is a common French, located in the department of the Guadeloupe. Its inhabitants is called the pointois .

Its agglomeration gathers 40% of the Inhabitants of Guadeloupe, 171  773 in 1999, out of 7 communes: of is in west Gosier , Abymes , Point-with-Clown , Bay-Mahault , Lamentin then towards the south Petit-Bourg and Goyave .

Geography

Point-with-clown is located at the west of the Large-Ground, vis-a-vis the roadstead open on the Caribbean Sea and ideally placed at the center of the Guadeloupe at the joint between the Large-Ground and the Low-Ground. It holds its own port of cruising, which is besides recently the surest port of cruising of the Lesser Antilles. Every 4 years, the city receives the arrival of famous the " Road of Rhum" who starts from St-Malo.

History

At the beginning of the colonization of the Guadeloupe, the site of Point-with-Clown holds the attention of the royal agents. It has many natural advantages, which in fact of paced a direct competitor of the town of Low-Ground. However because of the insalubrity of the place the authorities hesitate a long time to establish a center of settlement.

The name of the commune comes from a anthroponyme. A fisherman, Peter , Dutch Jewish exiled Brazil, would have been installed at the 17th century on a ground end lost in full vegetation on the point of the Large-Ground. Starting by the sale of fish, it according to certain interpretations would have developed its trade. Whereas many commercial boats and other corsairs sailed in water inhabitants of Guadeloupe, Pietr would have created a trade for all the ships of passage in the roads. The place would quickly have become impossible to circumvent for all the ships which found what there to buy or exchange goods, vivres or ammunition. All the sailors went to Pietr to the point. Becoming thus the point with Pietr, the city receives officially its name in 1772.

The February 8th 1843, the town of Point-with-Clown was destroyed by very a violent one earthquake (of a magnitude from approximately 7,5), followed by a fire which completed to destroy the building still upright. The assessment is established with 3.000 dead and more than 1.800 seriously injureds. This event had an enormous repercussion and caused a vast momentum of solidarity, initially in the islands and adjoining countries then in Metropolitan France. Because of the times of communication, the assistance of the metropolis arrived several months after the catastrophe.
