Point-Claire

Point-Claire is a city of the Agglomération of Montreal, with the Quebec (Canada) bordering the Lac Saint-Louis. The city has a population of 29.286 inhabitants. Its symbol is the windmill located not far from the Saint-Joachin church. The city has two public libraries, a watery center, an arena, a natural park and its own installations of water filtration.

Geography

The city is localized in the administrative area of Montreal (06). It is surrounded in the east by Dorval, the west by the towns of Kirkland and Beaconsfield, and in north by Dollard-Of Ormeaux. In the south, Point-Claire is bordered by the Lac Saint-Louis. Point-Claire belongs to the provincial district of Jacques-Cartier, and of the federal district of Lake-Saint-Louis.

History

The origin of this city goes back to the XVIIe century, when the grubbing of the grounds on the island of Montreal was enough advanced to establish a road to with it skirting southern bank of the island and going until the western end of the island. The adjacent grounds had then been conceded with a lord of the name of Saint-Joachim.

It is in 1854 that Point-Claire became officially a municipality. The nerve center of the agglomeration was then in the south of current the Autoroute 20. The arrival of the Large Trunk Railway (maintaining the railroad of the CN) in 1853, then the Canadian Pacific in 1887, as well as the advent of the telephone largely contributed to the rise of the city, which was at the time a destination of holidays very appraisal by the english-speaking.

The city is mainly anglophone with 56,7%, and French-speaking person with 24,0%.

Sports

The city has a vast sporting center including/understanding an arena, three swimming pools of which one of Olympic size and a tower of dive. Several athlete having taken part in the Olympic Games was involved with Point-Claire, in particular Anne Montminy in dive.

There exists also an association of soccer amateur, the ASAPC (assotiation of soccer amateur of Point-Claire), created in 1966.

Moreover, there exists a club of canoe, the CPCC (Club of canoe Point-Claire), which is distinguished more and more at the time of provincial competitions, national and even international. It is located in edge of the lake St-Louis and highway 20. For a few years, more than 150 young people and less young people have taken part in the programs of competition. Athletes such Tom Hall and Andrew Willows, two medal-holders of the last world cups, are the pride of the club and the town of Point-Claire. At the time of the Canadian championships 2006 held in Regina in Saskatchewan, the few 40 participating athletes brought back a score of medals as well as a trophy meaning the impressive victory of Sebastien Clermont and Marc Tarling at the time of the tests of C2 1000M Midget. The club, thanks to these performance, was even classified among 10 the best with the country. The multiple programs whose boat dragon, camps of day and the Masters categories interest more and more of participants.
