History
Poilly would come from Polliacum “fitted”. Indeed at the time Gallo-Roman a high roadway would have protected the village against the risings from the the Loire and places the way Orleans - Sancerre at the shelter of the flood. One found very old vestiges, in particular a bronze axe with heel of 16,5 cm, in sands of the the Loire. Gallo-Roman objects also attest an important human activity: fasten, of the keys, the currencies were found in Chézeau, Lucy and Vilaisie. Diggers updated, between the post office and the town hall, of the pieces of tiles with edges and Roman bricks. A beautiful pottery of 1st or 2nd century, in addition, was discovered below the level of the sarcophagi.
The habitat remains under the Mérovingiens and with the Middle Ages. A bridge undoubtedly existed between Poilly and Gien-the-Old; always it is that one was to cross the the Loire largely downstream from the current bridge. A church is built; the Protestants will partly destroy it in 1567. The parish, as those of Giennois of the south of the the Loire belongs to the diocese of Bourges.
Placed near Gien, the parish groups during modern times more than one thousand of inhabitants, more than Briare in 1665, which is worth to him to become in 1790 the chief town of a canton which gathers then Saint-Martin-on-Ocher, the Saint-Firmin-on-Loire, the Saint-Brisson-on-Loire and Autry-le-Châtel. In 1801, Poilly-lez-Gien belongs to the canton of Gien. In 1804, the Hamlet of the “End of the Bridge” the current district of the Berry, is attached to Gien: Poilly-lez-Gien loses in fact 350 inhabitants and its population of the beginning of the 19th century only in 1872 will find.
At the end of the 19th century, one still rents the quality of his grounds; the town hall built in 1858, is all new as well as the school (1874). The schooling of the children is not generalized yet: on 108 conscripts of 1868 with 1878, 26 are illiterate. At that time, the school library counts 89 volumes.
The church restored and increased in 1836 undergoes terrible raw 1846 and recovers the streets of the borough. Rebuilt after this date, a lifting protects it from raw from 1856 and 1866. Of 1884 with 1893, one builds a railway which connects Gien to Money-on-Sauldre by Poilly-lez-Gien and Coullons. The traffic will be never intense but this line leaves us one of the longest viaducts of Europe with 1866 meters and its 92 arches.
During first half of the XXe century, the commune is maintained between 1200 and 1300 inhabitants in spite of the First World War and the Rural migration.
After 1960, the proximity of Gien allows Poilly-lez-Gien a spectacular development. The common master key of 1366 inhabitants in 1962 with 2104 in 1982 then 2301 inhabitants in 1990.
