Etymology

Poilley comes, seems it, of Gallo-Roman the Paulius or Paullius . At the end of the 10th century, the church is placed under the dependence of the Gradeloc lord who entrusts it between 991 and 1009 to the abbey of the Mount-Saint-Michel. The descendants of the Gradeloc family bear the name of Poilley. Sometimes the parish of Poilley, which depended formerly on old évêché on Rennes, is still called Poilley-le-Léonnais, because of the first name of Léonèse or Léonnais carried to by several lords of Poilley. The castle of Poilley is the manor seigneurial of the parish. The seigniory of Poilley, concerned with the baronnie of Ferns, is set up in châtellenie in 1498. The grounds of the Poilley family are set up then in baronnie in 1595, then in county in 1636. This seigniory exerted a right of high justice to Saint-Georges de Reintembault. About 1660, the field of Poilley passes by alliance between the hands of the Princey family. The castle is preserved by the Princey family until 1889. The cemetery of Poilley is transferred between 1906 and 1910. Foot-note: the chouans, under the orders of Aime of Wood-Guy, are beaten close to Poilley by 3000 republicans on May 17th, 1796.
