Poi

The pea or bolas have as the most known origin that of the Argentins which drove out the cattle thanks to the bolas. However it is an error, because even if the name is identical and the similar form, they are not the same instruments nor the same utility.

Indeed the bolas Argentinas were made up of only one object, made of three balls of wood each one connected by a cord of about thirty centimetres which tied all the three in their ends. Moreover, the bolas Argentinas had only one practical goal, and any artistic interest nor technical.

Poi as we practice them today have as older base an art of ancestral combat practiced still nowadays by the monks Shaolin S. They use a chain provided at its end with a scraping-knife, the whole in each one with their hands. Besides there exists another art of juggles which represents best this, and which is called (or mono-chain).

Poi traditional

Material:
  • I Fe of the bolas E I vou enmerde
the practice of peas is not obligatorily synonymous with fire. As the remainder of the instruments of juggling (bludgeons, twin wheels, stick of the devil, etc), the material without fire technically remains more exploitable and thus makes it possible to work a broader pallet of figures.
  • to manufacture its clean bolas, the most used technique and which remains very sure is the use of kneesock, sock, etc, in which one places a weight (ball of tennis, of juggling, piece of fabric). The other assemblies are generally more complicated and the risk of projection of the weight is greater.
  • the ideal length of a poi corresponds to the length ranging between the hollow of the hand and the armpit, arm tended.

Taken in hand:

  • the simplest, easy and sure catch, remains the catch in " pince". It consists in taking the bola between the inch and the index. Moreover this catch will help you if you want to practice the swing (practical similar by replacing the bolas by bludgeons). The handle adapted to this catch is called the " catch-boule" , it is a small ball which one places in the hollow of the hand for then placing his inch and are index grips some around.
  • then it is nothing any more but one history of 8 and half-turn.

Luminous poi

  • These peas and small sticks (which act as chain) propose a large variety of colors: the chains like the luminous bolas, either are reloaded on a basis with electric adapter, or function using piles. The color is sometimes modifiable manually or automatically (programmable sequences).
  • a manner cheaper to obtain a material of this style is to adapt cyalumes, luminous soft foods for fishing and others " light sticks" , with its material of traditional drive.

Poi of fire

This type of bolas consists of a chain, a handle and a wick. The wick is soaked with a flammable product. The only advised products are the water of fire, ded-aromatize oil (more known under the name of kerdane) and the paraffin.

For the wicks, only ded-aromatize oil is recommended, this material is surest and makes it possible to obtain a flame of good quality during 4 to 15 minutes, according to the product imflammable used. The simplest and sure assembly is the assembly " cathédrale". It is possible to obtain flames of different colors. However, the vapors are much more harmful.

the poi with steel wool or steel wool

  • One uses two sufficiently resistant metal cylinders (box type of painting), two " cerceaux" metal of similar diameter, the solid wire. Give a very pretty aspect, giving a multitude of sparks. However, projections can go very far, therefore to supervise…

the Very practical grips with the

  • around a barbecue or of a wood fire, the grips with the enable you to take an ember in order to make bolas. That makes an effect close to a red laser beam.

the cords of fire

  • Two cords of Kevlar replace the chain and the weight. There is thus an entirely ignited bola. A security distance should be kept chains some between the catch and the beginning of the cord of at least 15 cm, not to burn itself.
