Poggiardo

Poggiardo is a common of the Province of Lecce in the area Pouilles in Italy.
It is one of the most important agglomerations in the neighborhoods of Otranto and has a hospital.

History

Many uncertainties persist on the very old origins of Poggiardo. Most probably, they are related to the old city of Bastae (today Vaste, hamlet of 1200 inhabitants belonging to the commune), destroyed in 1147 by Guillaume Ier of Sicily. The name of Poggiardo comes from Latin " Arduum" podium; who means " support ardu" what clearly refers to the forest of Poggiardo.
In the neighborhoods of the end of the 14th century, Poggiardo belongs to the principality of Tarente and it is at that time that the city becomes the stronghold of the antique family of the Guarini di Poggiardo (family of origin Norman arrived in the Pouilles in 1065 shortly after Hautevilles). They had several ground strongholds of Otranto whose Lequile, Acquarica del Capo, Martignano, Poggiardo and Scorrano current residence of the family, and received the title of Prince de Tarse at the 19th century. They also took part in the I {{Re}} crusade.
Guarini accepted the title of duke of Poggiardo towards 1350.
