Podor is a city of the Senegal, located at 215 km in the east of Saint-Louis (Senegal), on the island in Morfil, between two arms of the Fleuve Senegal.

History

Podor is the old capital of one of the first kingdoms of the area, the Tekrour, established at the 11th century. At the 17th century, the city becomes a stage on the road of the Royaume of Galam, essential to the trade of the slaves, the ivory and the gum. The fort is supposed to ensure a French presence on the river and inside Senegal, but its means are limited.

Letters of the knight Stanislas de Boufflers with his wife, the countess of Sabran, shows us what is a fort of king de France, on the river Senegal, in 1788 when André de Rambaud stops there. It makes us a fast description of Podor: Oh! my child, the unpleasant place and unpleasant people! This poor Senegal, from which I made you of so sad paintings, is a Louvre, a Elysium in comparison. I am overpowered businesses and of heat; I have only time to kiss you. I feel weaker and heavier than I still was it, and I even ordered, if that lasted, that my building was ready to leave tomorrow morning, because I want to die only between your arms… It passes to the truth for, the stove of Africa; but it still passes all that one of known as. The thermometer says some more than anybody; because I hung it around one hour and half with the wall, outwards, with the sun, and the spirit of wine touched the end of the tube, so that one was obliged to depend the thermometer and to return it, for fear it did not break, more especially as it was so extreme that my gloves were marked by it. I do not have you depicts the cursed one extremely where I am. It is a square court surrounded by four bad buildings at ground floor, without floor, without ceilings, covers of badly united boards, and in each corner of the species of turrets, in one of which remains the commander. The garrison, made up of twenty failing soldiers, remains in a species of stable, beside the door; the remainder is intended for stores where there is almost nothing, and where all is spoiled in little time by the excess of heat. So that after having still reflected there, and me to be assured the perfect uselessness of this station, I could well, from here with my departure, to make it shave.
