Podcasting

The podcasting or baladodiffusion is a free means of diffusion of audio or video files in the Internet which one names podcasts or balados .

Via a subscription to flows RSS or Atom, the baladodiffusion makes it possible to the users to automate the remote loading of audio emissions or video for their walkman or their personal computer for an immediate or later listening.

Operation

The concept

The files balados, audio like video, are available on the Internet and generally free. They are emitted by different standard diffusers and automatically received in a reader from balados which cumulates the emissions. Thereafter, the listener can listen to them directly on this reader, download them on his personal computer or transmit them on his walkman.

The baladodiffusion is different from broadcasting and the remote transmission by the distribution of the sound or the video, not by a centralized mechanism which would send a flow towards its listeners (either with all), but by the action of the listeners who charge the files balados (or all by one - or drawn pulling instead of thorough pushing ). The authors publish files and it is to the listeners that returns the role to manage a Liste of reading with their various subscriptions. The remote loading of the files is then automated and resulting from the multiple sources which they chose. In other words, it is the audience which chooses authors of balados, and the updates of the new emissions will be automatic in their Agrégateur.

The two actors of the baladodiffusion are thus:

  • Those which seek themselves the audio or video files (user).
  • Those which publish on the Internet these audio or video files (diffusion).

Readers of balados (agregator)

To receive, to read and cumulate subscriptions balados, a agregator (reader) is necessary in order to announce the updates of a subscription. Here the list of most popular:
  • Google Reader: reader of audio stream, video, image or text. ()
  • ITunes: audio and fascinating video charge the IPod with them.
  • Winamp : audio and fascinating video charge the IPod with them.
  • Listen : audio and video for Linux, posting the words.
  • Akregator : reader of flow RSS integrated into KDE.
  • Netvibes : Agregator of contents RSS.
  • Miro : agregator and reader of multimedia contents (podcast, local resources, removable media…).

Technical description

By adding necessary technologies to the automatic remote loading of audio and video files, the baladodiffusion was popularized by the Blog S like on the sites of certain “traditional” diffusers. The availability of the walkmen and the turn which the diffusers of mass took (radio and television) quickly increase the popularity of this mode of diffusion. One finds more and more media (to see the list) which diffuse their recorded broadcasts by the method of the flow RSS. It is a question for the listener of subscribing free with one or more diffusions, then each update will be announced and cumulated in a reader (agregator).

The blogs, often of the personal Web sites, propose a means easy with their authors to publish themselves their balados. Already, the format RSS gave a means of summarizing or of listing contents coldly added to the site. The authors of sites used also flows RSS to add contents resulting from third sites. And thus is added now to the writing, the video audio, it and the automatic remote loading of these files in the personal computers and the walkmans able to read them.

Baladodiffusion uses, in addition to contents audio or video, of data descriptive and of Metadata related to files (labels ID3 for the MP3) such date, title, summary, bonds, photographs, chapitrage (useful to arrive directly at a particular sequence when the contents read rather long or are segmented in several headings), etc These advanced functionalities are available on the files to the format MPEG-4, such as those whose extension finishes by .m4a, .m4b, .mp4, .m4p, or .m4v.

Terminology

The terms balado, baladodiffusion, baladodiffusor were proposed fine October 2004 by the Québécois Office of the French language to translate podcast, podcasting, podcaster. Baladodiffusion is a portemanteau word resulting from the contraction of walkman and broadcasting. They were adopted by certain large baladodiffuseurs like Radio-Canada (March 2005), Radio France (September 2007) and Radio France international (at the end of 2007). The general Commission of terminology and neology (France) proposed as for it diffusion for walkman (March 25th 2006). The translation podiffusion (Swiss) also seems to make its appearance, however the term was not retained by the OQLF. The baladodiffusion term was consigned besides in the edition 2008 of Petit Larousse illustrated.

According to the nature of the digital contents, one will specify about which type of baladodiffusion it is: audio baladodiffusion (audio podcasting or audiocasting), video baladodiffusion (video podcasting or videocasting), radio baladodiffusion (radio podcasting or radiocasting) or photo baladodiffusion (photo podcasting or photocasting). One also can, according to the context, speech simply of an audio balado, video balado, radio balado or photo balado.

The English word podcasting is a Mot-valise which comes from the contraction of iPod, the Baladeur with success of Apple, and broadcasting, meaning diffusion. This name was chosen by Adam Curry which is at the origin of the development of the baladodiffusion, because it acted at the time of the walkman more used. One will find the Pomcasting term besides within the framework of the podcasts inherent in the community Apple French-speaking person. Those which do not like explicit publicity in favor of the iPod of Apple prefer English speech of blogcasting' and more recently of audioblogging, more credits. Leo Laporte, considered American baladodiffusor, and some others bitten try to impose netcast since Apple tries to protect its mark from the names comprising the expression “pod”.

Following the example broadcasting and remote transmission, it is important to differentiate the mode from diffusion of the diffused product (baladodiffusion is not synonymous with balado). Thus, a baladodiffusor will say: my balado of the week on the new tendencies…, my emissions are available by (or in) baladodiffusion.

In France, the general Commission of terminology and neology disadvises the use of the words of anglophone origin (podcasting and podcast). According to it, their current use ready with confusion, making the amalgam enters the actions of the diffuser and the listener. She proposes to use the generic terms Diffusion for walkman and Téléchargement.

Terms used

The two terms (podcasting and baladodiffusion) are employed on Internet sites of the large diffusers of mass media French-speaking people:
