Places and monuments
Poët-Laval means the monticule of the valley (pogetum vallis).
A hurled tower, a majestic Keep (the famous most beautiful being of Provence), an old village with the tortuous and majestic lanes where time stopped ............. with the Middle Ages!
It is at the 12th century that Poët-Laval makes its entry in the History. An entry with full orchestra! It is at that time that the Hospital ones of Midsummer's Day of Jerusalem, an order semi-monk, semi-soldier, created in Palestine as of the beginning of the Crusades, establish there, probably at the instigation of one their Large-Masters, originating in the area, one of the most important commanderies of Provence. In the lanes which resembled those that in love ones with the hurdy-gurdies stones traverse today, sauntered, there is a little less than thousand years, of the monk-knights to the long bearing black coat on the left side the white cross with eight points symbolizing Huits Béatitudes of the Sermon on the Mountain. It is them which made build not to live there but to resist to the attackers it Donjon, with which starts and any visit of Poët-Laval finishes. It is the Gothic period which put a smile on the austere frontage by boring a very pretty window there at double warhead.
The Vault in hemicycle with three edges, offers enough an good example of Romanesque art. The Midsummer's Day Tower, which was set up directly above the furnace bridge, also dates from the Romance time. It is with it that ended the enclosure which enclosed the hill and inside which the dwellings gradually grouped. One finds this enclosure, perfectly restored, in the low part of the village, beside the Tower of the South.
At the 15th century, the Hospital ones become Chevaliers of Malta made build with the south-western angle a news Commanderie (Living room of the Commanders) which one will not fail to admire the turns as well as the frontage decorated with superb cross gothic scripts.
The Museum of the Protestantism From the Dauphine, installed in the old temple and which since of old bibles huguenotes to old stools used during the clandestine meetings, gathers moving memories, in particular over the period of persecutions which the area the shortly after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes knew.
