Plungė () is a city of the North-West of the Lithuania. Plungė is a city of the apskritis of Telšiai, to 27 km in the West of the town of Telšiai. The last census gives a report on 23,246 inhabitants.

In the north of Plungė the railway line Šiauliai is - Klaipėda. Not far is the stage Oginskis, the palate Oginskis and its park. The palate shelters now a museum D `art of the Samogitie. On the place of the old city draws up the church Saint Jean-Baptiste (set up in 1933) and his belfry. The other remarkable monuments of the city are: a statue commemorating the 10 years of the birthday of the independence which was built in 1928, a sculpture entitled “Saint Florian” (protective of the chimney sweepers and firemen) made by the artist Kazys Barzdys (1867-1957), a counterpart of the cave of Massabielle of Lourdes built in 1908, the vault of All Saints' day going back to 1858.

Origin of the name of the city

The origin of the name of the city is not entirely clear. It is thought that it comes from the Plungė first name which is used in various areas of Lithuania and the Samogitie.
