Ploieşti
Ploieşti is a town of Romania, chief town of the Judeţ de Prahova. Its population is estimated at 234.000 inhabitants in 2002.
During the Second world war, the city was an important target for the 15th USAAF. Indeed, its oil refineries is controlled by the Nazi Germany, and the Allies try to destroy them with many recoveries. However, it is a target defended very well, and the American aviators undergo important losses there. Ploieşti is, for the aviators of the 15th USAAF, one of the most dreaded objectives of all MTO. The site in particular was the theater of the operation Tidal Wave, first American strategic bombardment on Europe.
