Plaza Lavalle

The Plaza Lavalle or Place Lavalle is one of the principal places of the town of Buenos Aires, capital of the Argentine.

Situation

It is in the district of San Nicolás (Buenos Aires), except its northern edge, which belongs to the district of Retiro. It with the shape of a lengthened rectangle, whose axis is directed south-north. It is surrounded by the arteries Calle Lavalle (in the south), Avenida Córdoba (in north), Calle Talcahuano (in the west) and Calle Libertad (in the east). The place consists of 3, or manzanas blocks of houses (small islands) of more than one hectare. Its surface, of frontage with frontage exceeds the 40  000 square meters (4 hectares). In the surroundings of the place are several historic sites, administrative or cultural of the city.

Plaza Lavalle is crossed of is in west by two important streets; the Hold Viamonte in north and the Hold Tucumán in the south.

History

Formerly, with the XVIIIe century the place was a ground in waste land where there was a lagoon. One of the brooks of the city passed there, the stream Tercero del Medio . Its bed followed the Calle Libertad , and turned towards the east to the fixes Viamonte . One had built a bridge there to cross it. After independence in 1822, one installed an artillery park there, with factory of weapons and powder deposit. This park was the principal theater of the Révolution of the Park , in July 1890, where the opponents with the management of the president Miguel Juárez Celman clashed.

Description

There are on the place several statues and monuments as well as trees centenaries. Among the monuments, there is of them one in the honor of Juan Lavalle, and others still, of which one was built with the memory of the victims of the flight accident of 1971 which cost the life several ballerinas of the Teatro Colón. Among the trees centenaries, one finds agathis australianus of more than 120 years and a Ceibo of Jujuy planted in 1878 by the intendant of the city Torcuato de Alvear.

On the field of the old artillery park, vis-a-vis Plaza Lavalle (in south-west), is the Law courts ( Palacio de Justicia of Nación ). This large building which recovers the totality of a small island (one hectare) is the seat of the judicial power of Argentina as well as Supreme court of Justice. It was a project of the architect Norberto Maillart, who was too drew also the plans of the Colegio Nacional of Buenos Aires. The building was inaugurated in 1942.

Vis-a-vis the place, but on the opposite side (in the east), is the main entrance of the Teatro Colón, one of the lyric scenes most important of the world. Its construction began in 1889, on the basis of project of Victor Meano. It was inaugurated the May 25th 1908. The principal room has a capacity of 2  478 spectators, and counts seven stages. The building does not occupy less 6  000 m ².

Subway

The station " Tribunales" Línea is located at the crossroads of the Tucumán Hold and the Talcahuano Hold, with two steps of the Supreme court.
